Spacebomb Records is back at Balliceaux, this time presenting Richmond’s favorite cinematic avant-garde and math jazz powerhouses. Inspired by works of John Carpenter, Ingrid Bergman, and kung fu to new a few, Glows in the Dark twists film music into creative and thrilling structures all unto themselves. Ombak spews fire and life into complex jazz-metal while nodding to Tuvan folk music and free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman.

Ombak: Hooten/Kuhl/Pollard/Ralston/Jones

Chris Farmer was the drummer and co-composer for pioneering math-rock band Breadwinner. He has released three solo full length releases spanning three decades. He has also been in the following bands/musical projects: Flat Stanley, Plaid Joke, German Version, Mao Tse Helen, Crux, Hotel X, Eggs, Gourd, Manwich Tantrum, Sh’ezzaduzzi, McCavitt & Farmer, Sweat Family, more. In his most recent solo project he MIDI maps keyboard and synthesizer parts onto a sequencer, and plays a drum kit to flesh out the songs.

Lily Maase and Suite Unraveling: More rock band than jazz quintet, yet playing music more improvised than composed, Lily and the Suite have one foot planted in the world of rock and roll and the other firmly in the avant-garde, embracing influences as broad as Ornette Coleman, electronic music, and guitar heroes from the days of yore. The goal? To create something honest and new, steeped in the sensibility of simpler times, but reaching with reckless abandon into the sonic landscape that lays ahead.

SCUO is a duo made up of a couple of Scotts. Scott Burton and Scott Clark. They have been making a name for themselves pushing the limits of what jazz is through grooves, riffs, and minimalism.

Morning show free jazz

This morning, Ombak had the pleasure of playing live on CBS 6′s Virginia This Morning. A couple of us had done this gig before, either with No BS! Brass or Modern Groove Syndicate but this was a different animal. The “composition” Megatron is really just a set of two rhythmic passages, the notes for which are totally improvised. I’d say some very cool, unpredictable yet inevitable moments occurred. Check it out for yourself here. Check us out live at Balliceaux on Wednesday night.
